Best unexpected gifts include the album a couple friends compiled of candid shots of the reception, after party, and Sunday brunch. This was before the days of cell phone cameras so they had to plan ahead. Another friend's gift was a wedding video. We expected just raw footage and didn't ask for anything other than pushing play on a recorder we set up in the church, but they ended up making a great dvd.

Nice silverware in sets of at least 8 that all match. I like the weight of Oneida.

Definitely cash, put toward a down payment.

For an actual gift that isn't money - a high quality chef's knife.

My new bil, then my sister's boyfriend, gave us a beautiful picture frame. We put a wedding photo in it. I'm looking at it now, sitting my my shelf 26 years later. Of course, we didn't set up a registry! He just had/has great tastes and is quite thoughtful.

Every time I think about dragging the china out of the attic to use it, I just run out of time and use regular plates. Say no to the china.

I went years not using my China but feeling bad getting rid of it. I decided to just start using it and putting it in the dishwasher like regular plates etc. we don’t use it every day but it feels special.
