I used to recommend books on the libraries’ Overdrive hosted websites and that worked very well for me. When one of my libraries purchased the book I was notified by email and placed in the hold queue in order of date recommended. I often got the books on or near the publication date. But now Overdrive destroyed that, probably to force us to use Libby.

Recent comments have confused how Libby handles recommendations. I will appreciate if Libby users will describe how Libby handles recommendations. Also, can I recommend books for purchase at multiple libraries?

Not the same as Recommend in overdrive, but the Notify Me feature seems to work well. I’ve used it on many books and several have ended up being acquired by the library so far. It does not put an automatic hold, but if you have notifications set up then you’ll be able to go in and place a hold.

I know, it’s not the same. But just putting it out there in case anyone wasn’t already aware of the feature.

I also hate libby! All that clutter drives me bonkers! You also can't recommend a book. One reply said to go to website to do that but guess what,you could do that in overdrive! I could also read my ebooks that I own on overdrive. I contacted support and they said couldn't do that on libby yet

I am the PP from page three who prefers to listen to audiobooks on my MP3 player.

I spent March and April downloading lots of audiobooks from my library to my MP3 player. Eventually I got "put on restriction" for a week from my library for downloading audiobooks and transferring them to my MP3 player, then returning the books a few hours later, then checking out a bunch more just a few hours later, again and again.

After that I connived a relative in another state into letting me use his library and logon info to download books from his library. Until I got "put on restriction" for a week from that library as well.

Now I have more than 100 audiobooks downloaded to my MP3 player. Since the MP3 player is not connected to the internet, they don't disappear until I delete them.

Once the month of May rolled around, I downloaded just one audiobook just to see what would happen. It turns out if you are using a regular computer for overdrive, it all works the same as before. I can still download and transfer audiobooks to my MP3 player just like before.

Oh well. I didn't know that was how it would be. If I had known, I would not have downloaded a whole big gob of audiobooks in advance.

I haven ever really used Overdrive, but I have used Libby. Almost exclusively for audio books that I listen to while I do chores or walk or drive. I also download audiobooks for my kids.

I love it. It's an amazing resource.

I loved overdrive. It made sense. I could do everything I wanted. There was nothing wrong with it.

You guys crack me up. I’m sorry you hate it so much. I never used overdrive - just Libby.

My mom and my sister used overdrive and I guess liked it better but seem to have managed to move over to Libby pretty fine 🤣

I am just so happy to be able to get library books on my kindle so easily. It has literally changed my life!

I agree, it's an awful app, but obviously the developers don't care about readers.

I also hate Libby. It's such a clunky app. It skips in audio books and the layout is awful. Overdrive was so much easier to navigate.

Overdrive owns both apps. It costs less money to maintain one app than two so it’s probably just money.

Most of the surrounding counties allow you to get library cards. They will usually activate the card if you send a photo of your license so you don’t have to drive there. Is that what you are asking? DC will not. They force you to drive to a branch.

Many maryland counties allow cards for anyone in the state.

Just to add, don’t expect to get an account at a library where you don’t meet the residency requirements, and don’t expect to get help on how to cheat the system.
