These posts are crazy making.

Even if dc lifted the 5 year limit, for the love of God take a peek at the requirements and the low amount you can receive. Nobody is thriving on tanf their entire lives.
You must have children (that homeless guy under the bridge doesn't qualify), you must engage in searching for work/training activities, and, for example, a family of 4 can receive $850 per month MAX. And that's high. It varies by state.

40% or Americans pay no federal income tax at all. And it’s not the middle class. So please GTFO with that.

Thanks for making my point for me. They pay no income tax because… mortgage interest deductions.

* should have clarified: some have income too low to pay taxes. But others take that mortgage interest deduction and don’t have to pay either.

Are you serious? You are comparing homeowners with people receiving public assistance? Gtfo

NP. Government money is government money.

Homeowners contribute to the state through taxes and etc. what is the contribution of a welfare recipient and their families? Please help me understand

Most welfare recipients are employed. They pay taxes. What part of that don't you understand?

Hmmm, do they receive a tax refund every year? I sure as hell do not. I'm confident they do. Not np.

If you don’t understand America’s tax rates and percentage of income, I can’t help you.

You paint poor people as undeserving. They’re just as deserving as any other American. Why is government aid ok for you and me but not them?! They pay taxes like us.

Instantly thought of this. Yes, the rich get the most welfare, but they love that everyone else is fighting over the crumbs and they want to keep you distracted with the (tiny amounts within a budget) of welfare.

You know plenty of white people get welfare and disability? Funny how you automatically made it a question of racism.

Well, all 100,000 + Ukrainians who arrived under U4U program are eligible and receiving welfare (insurance, food stamp, and in some states even housing money).

This is one reason I’ll be voting republican next election. My elderly, sick dad would starve if I didn’t by all of his food. He’s almost destitute. But, doesn’t qualify for SNAP even after years and years of taxes. However, new immigrants get this benefit automatically. Criminal.

Sorry that your father is not being taken care of, our priorities in this country are up side down. Thankfully you can pitch hit, sadly they are many others who don't have the help you provide. I will never vote for a party again that perpetuates this injustice. I mean this is what's going on in France right now, the immigrant population takes such a huge percentage of the social services that they are now asking citizens to work two more years to cover this extravagance, two for now, we know it will keep going on extensions. Just 14% of the French population between the ages of 14 and 19 are unemployed, 55% of the same age group of migrants are unemployed. I get the anger. Paris is truly burning right now.

So do poor people! Many people on TANF are in between jobs. You cannot be on welfare for years anymore. Majority of TANF use it to carry them through short bouts of unemployment. They have paid sale taxes and payroll taxes.

Welfare? Did the cashier mean SNAP? There is no welfare like there was in the 70s. TANF doesn’t reach many needy families.

The problem is middle and upper class people get acceptable welfare in the form of mortgage tax deductions, subsidized student loans, lower capital gains tax, 529 and 401k breaks. Middle and upper class get discrete welfare from the government so they think they’re better than people of food stamps or TANF. But we are all getting government support in one way or another!

It’s not the first time cashiers have try to embarrass people out loud.

Why do you think it is embarrassing? To me the cashier was just stating the fact. Are you projecting your own feeling toward the people on welfare?
