I worked with a woman who tragically became a widow very suddenly at about 32. She posted a Go FundMe immediately. She raised a ton of money on top of a large insurance payout. She retired and now posts nonstop pictures of herself on beaches and yachts.

THIS. And the fact that we can’t discuss this, and micro preemies (which seem to get smaller each year and it’s praised like some medical achievement) and expensive treatment for terminal illnesses. We have to talk about it - it’s unaffordable and unattainable. Those that don’t see this have large employee heavily subsidized insurance, which still gets more expensive every year. It’s way more than inflation - our ACA plan with no changes went up 25% in a YEAR.
Sure, those are extreme examples. But what you really want is to deny medical treatment to these outliers because you see it as somehow interfering with your own healthcare coverage. It's selfish.

I was watching that 1,000 pound sisters show and I shudder at the money being spent on the one sister. She's been in a care facility for a YEAR. She has no means of making a living, she had the bariatric surgery, but then there's the skin surgery - it has to be millions on her, meanwhile there are kids in this country that can't see a dentist. I dunno. There has to be a limit somewhere.

I mean why reserve the cruelty for only the preemies? We could save lots of money by not treating cancer, not feeding anyone with a brain injury or dementia, refusing dialysis for kidney patients. The options are endless.
Which is what happens in those utopian countries. They send you home with painkillers if you’re sick.

Well I have private health insurance. You're free to choose your own policy, but it sounds like what you want is just life insurance.

My father died last year and you would not believe the number of people who asked about donating to a GoFundMe for his widow (my mom). We never set one up, but he was a very loved man and people wouldn’t quit nagging about a GFM. My mom would never allow a GFM or donations in general, so people literally handed me checks and told me to use them for the funeral.

Wow. I have a former micro preemie. The thing is you have no idea what the future holds. My child is doing well now. Some learning distant, but smart and we expect college and for my child to be a contributing member of society.
