It's interesting that when kids are denied at MIT, it's "just a tough admit," but when high stat kids are denied at other top schools, it's yield protection or some kind of discrimination.MIT is looking for innovation and inventiveness. By-the-book high stats won't get you in. And of course comp sci and engineering majors are capped, doesn't matter that they don't admit directly to the major.
