“Bow” was in quotes. MAGA fans aren’t mad about literal “bowing.” They’re upset that measures are taken to ensure that colleges have some diversity. They’re upset that discrimination in hiring is forbidden. They’re upset that minority voters might swing an election. In a nutshell, they’re upset that being white isn’t as much of an advantage as it once was.

That's probably true and, if so, they should just say that. But instead they are arguing that all of them are oppressed because someone got their dinner interrupted in DC last summer.

Yeah, none of that demonstrates anyone being forced to bow. It demonstrates a few people having their dinner interrupted. I'll ask again, if you believe your are forced to bow, how often do you do that? Are you compliance with this requirement or not?

Of course you haven’t heard of this as an issue, because in your political echo chamber, concerns about the surrogacy industry are carefully curated out. You could learn about it yourself if you spent an hour or so reading about it. There is a lot published in both reputable academic journals and in some newspapers. However, it is frequently an issue that gets silenced by progressives as “bigotry” when raised.

And I am a moderate leftist myself. But I am not so partisan that I can’t acknowledge a problem.

NP. I hate how polarized everything has become. We have become a nation where complex topics are reduced to stupid and cruel tweets, like the one in the OP. Of course that is a bigoted, nasty post.

BUT what is also left unsaid (and what people on the left will scream at you for even mentioning) is that surrogacy in the US is frequently highly exploitative, when paid it is exclusively performed by poor women for rich parents, surrogates have almost no recourse to financial remuneration if they are harmed by the pregnancy (there is no “worker’s comp” for surrogates and no real means of using the courts for compensation), children born of surrogates have little ability to talk about their emotional struggles related to surrogacy if they have them, because much like the adoption complex of fifty years back, the children are expected to shut up and be grateful for the lives they didn’t ask for, surrogacy is banned by most Western countries, surrogates in poor countries are treated horrifically and subject to extreme abuse, and more. It is often a dark and twisted industry that hurts many, many people in order to provide children to an exceptionally wealthy and powerful group of people.

It should be okay to talk about this. Leftists should be willing to advocate for the poor women who are hurt and harmed by surrogacy. But as a group, they largely aren’t. Meanwhile, why is surrogacy coming up for right-wing political figures? The facile (and yet true) answer is homophobia and bigotry. And that is certainly part of it. But it is also coming up because the women hurt and exploited by the surrogacy industry are disproportionately poor women in red states. So right wing audiences, they are much more likely to actually know a surrogate mother as a friend, as a family member, as a person who isn’t just seen as a rented womb. They are more likely to see the depersonalization, the comparative lack of pay, the lack of any real legal recourse, the powerless position a surrogate is in.

I’m not excusing the bigotry. It’s awful. And I think there are ways to make surrogacy less exploitative and harmful, but right now the discourse on the left is such that if you raise the issue of the darker aspects of surrogacy, you are immediately tarred as a homophobic bigot.
