Those students didn’t just engage in hate speech; they named fellow students they wanted to kill and described how to do it. Why does MCPS have a policy that allows such behavior to result in a temporary suspension from an extracurricular activity?! That’s beyond the pale.
that’s insane

They just got reemed for not ensuring “restorative Justice” participation is voluntary and now they’re saying they want to force parents to come in and participate. Get the popcorn ready.

I'd want to be there if they forced my child through it.

In DC this is done through the police department and parents of the victim have to consent and be present. My understanding is that if the victim says no, the RJ route is off the table. I'm not sure how RJ works when there isn't a particular victim, but a whole world of people.

I don’t think she is necessarily a fan of his, but given she not Mcps has clarified on why they did an event with his fraternity I don’t think I can trust Mcps or her. If she just said “ I didn’t know, I’m sorry” I would be fine . I’m the one who pointed out her event being with Farrakhan’s fraternity. I’ve written to multiple organizations, nobody replied . Given they are aware but don’t feel a need to explain I cannot trust Mcps

That should tell you everything you need to know. You don’t accept an award from an organization affiliated with someone like that unless you support them.
but if that’s the case same applies to Kamala. She has done multiple events with them since 2019

Yep. The connections between Farrakhan and the AA community are far-reaching and disturbing. No one wants to talk about it because ultimately Farrakhan’s main issue is he’s anti-Semitic and most people just don’t care about advocating for Jews.

Honestly, I think it is better to not give more attention to the issue. If we make a big deal about it, I think it would actually encourage kids to mess around more as an act of rebellion.

There is a huge lack of boundaries in school right now, so kids are doing more extreme acts in order to rebel and stand out.

Would you say it was just kids messing around if they were targeting black people or Hispanics or really any other minority?

Describing it this way really minimizes what is going on. These kids know what they’re doing.

Wondering if this attention has been somewhat counterproductive, possibly leading to increased incidents? Similar to why media doesn’t report the names of shooters, to discourage copycats from seeking fame in this way.

So should we ignore all hate crimes? Or just the ones against Jews.

Not drawing more attention than necessary is not the same as ignoring all hate crimes.

As a Jew, I’m really disturbed by your approach to this.
face it. People only care about antisemitism if it comes from the right.

I've received 3 emails from MCPS on this topic in the last two weeks and there have been at least a dozen local news stories. Tell me again about "no one cares."
if it were anti black or anti hispanic in nature it would have been national headlines and punishing the culprits wouldn’t have been ruled out

Well that's crazy because her statement directly said that this is how they would proceed for any incidents of hate or bias against any group.

That’s not how it plays out though and you know it.
if there were a shoelace in a tree it would be considered a noose incident and national headlines. There is zero chance they would do restorative Justice

I personally know an anti-semitic kid whose parents appeared to be your normal parents. Kid was privileged and not that bright. - no idea why he espoused the views but IMO he was nit punished enough by his peer/parent community because everyone was worried his future would be ruined vis-a-vis college. Another one was from an Italian diplomat family and was very pro-fascism - as is currently politically acceptable in Italy. And even before McKnight arrived - Westland had a swastika graffiti incident.

IMO, too many parents think that punishing these incidents will make more of them. I feel the reverse, making it known that if kids are caught engaging in racist or anti-semitic slurs or grafitti, it will go on their disciplinary record, will go a long way to deterrence.

The problem for MCPS remains that we live in a society where free speech is the norm and expectation and constitutionally protected. I agree that we can do better as parents to educate children and teach them to be empathetic to others, but the reality is that there’s no such thing as the speech police, despite MCPS thinking this is their new job.

I’m all for educating and teaching children to be more empathetic of others feelings, teaching children about other cultures, exposing them to various people from various backgrounds, and don’t agree with these hateful words and actions, but they have a right to say it whether I agree with them or not -assuming there’s no actual crime involved. I seriously doubt any student will care about some ding on their records over an unconstitutional MCPS policy. If I were reviewing college admissions apps I’d be more impressed by the person that stood up against the school for such anti-Constitutional policies. If a student gets something they said put in their permanent record it’s a great opportunity to write an essay about standing up for your rights.

I’ve noticed in speaking to others that they too are concerned about the overreach by the administration. Words and actions can be twisted and misinterpreted and putting so much emphasis on this clearly is escalating the situation right now, not making it go away. MCPS seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Free speech is not without limits, especially hate speech that invites violence. And beyond the speech, defacing public property is prohibited and there should be consequences for that.
