I don't think anyone said she wasn't polite or pleasant in social company. You can be both nice with acquaintances, and also be a depraved lunatic who wants to burn the whole country down - or, who is glad to light the fire if you think it'll further your political ambitions. Those aren't contradictory.
See also: Those endless articles about the extremely polite and neighborly Nazis living in suburbs all over the place. It's not like having repellant and dangerous political views means that you don't know how to say hello or ask about someone's day.

We all have different aspects of our social behavior. We adapt, depending on our audience. Of course she was pleasant in a setting with her children. Not even SHS wants her children to be social outcasts!

NP I have been reporting fat shaming comments on this thread but my take on that one was more along the lines of “because of our collective hatred of fat people, they are listened to and believed less.” Like they weren’t trying to shame her, they were pointing out the fact that fat people are not trusted or liked (and this is borne out in studies), so it was an odd choice for the GOP.
