I do find it a bit odd that the mother’s obituary mentions that she was buried in the habit of the 3rd order of the Dominicans. That’s….intense. And then the obituary insinuates that basically she let pregnant single women live in her home until they gave birth and then they were bounced out.

They were all kind and most had great senses of humor. Dad was off-the-boat Irish and that was very cool in our community.

I've blocked a lot from that time because it was stifling to be a young woman who was starting to question whether my politics and beliefs were authentic or just held because it was all I knew. I do remember the dad lecturing a table full of us about how to establish credit. He said that the best way was to buy a toaster on store credit at a department store and then go right upstairs and pay it off with cash. My parents had already given me a credit card for emergencies and explained how credit worked, so I said I didn't think that was enough time for the credit to be established. He wasn't happy and insisted that's what you had to do.

Actually I think the number of kids is indicative of his politics and I suspect speaks to the root issue he is trying to accomplish.
