The old SRO program was a model program and Elrich and the schools wrecked it. SRO went through a rigorous screening process and had an additional 40 hours of annual training on things like adolescent development, crisis intervention, deescalation, and more. They were the best of the best.

Look at the police response yesterday . They had to use more police because they apparently haven’t caught the kids yet and there is still a threat. And there were state police there, which means Rockville city doesn’t have enough cops, and I am sure those state troopers don’t have SRO training.

So yes, several CEOs are covering more than one high school. It's a complete mess and a waste of valuable talent.

That probably also happens whenever a CEO is out sick or on vacation or other leave, so between the shortages and regular leave, I'd guess they are often covering multiple clusters. I think the old SRO model had one dedicated SRO per HS, plus an additional one (or more?) that covered the cluster middle schools and ES. They didn't do much in the ES, but did work with the safety patrols and were available on call and close by (at the MS) in case something came up. My little kids knew the SRO from the safety patrol program, and they maybe also did a talk once or twice about some safety issue for the kids.
The whole goal of the SRO program was to allow them to know the kids and the community -- teachers and staff as well as students. That way, if something were brewing that a teacher or student overheard, they could say something like "you didn't hear it from me, but I heard this kid threaten that kid and say something was going down at the game tonight..." The schools would often use their own SRO for things like games and dances, but then also let their SRO find additional officers if they wanted deeper coverage -- so the SRO could pull in the SROs working the cluster middle school, or someone from the SRO program at another HS -- all of whom had been trained to work with kids, and maybe had some ffamiliarity with the specific kids involved. I don't think the CEO program has as much depth.
I do think that the SRO program could have been better implemented, with more training (which the officers would have appreciated) and more opportunities for the SROs to interact with the youth when they weren't in trouble (which, again, the officers really wanted and was part of the original plan for the program).

Ridiculous. Previously, we had an SRO for our MS and another SRO for our high school. Both were wonderful.

There were 26 SROs, one per each high school/alternative school. Not at middle schools.

Ridiculous. Previously, we had an SRO for our MS and another SRO for our high school. Both were wonderful.

Elrich should come and deal with these kids for a week, try to break up fights, deal with kids who are violent.

They think Restorative Justice will reduce violence, and sitting together in a circle sharing feelings is going to help them.

CEOs are indeed reactive. MCPS thinks RJ is being proactive.
