No excuses. This is a fact. The president of them only polytechnic university in the state wants 40 percent URM and first generation. The population of the state is not 40 percent URM. That is called social engineering. Many question if that is the proper role of the only public polytechnic. Read Chrinicke if Higher Education before casting aspirations. This is called a newsworthy issue so open to decays. Stop shutting down those who actually know what is going on.

The population of VT will never be anywhere near 40% URM. People are fixated on the URM portion of the goal and use that to misconstrue what is actually happening. BTW, what percent of the state is first generation? My guess is that it's higher than URM.

OK, it is relative, but for the 75th percentile of 2022-23 entering class, W&M is 1520 SAT, 34 ACT, and 4.51 GPA. VT is 1400, 32, and 4.28. UVA, as a comparison, is 1520, 34, and 4.53.

Virginia Tech admits by major, so stats and admission rates are all over the place. When you average the stats they are lower, but for some majors VT ihad a 20% acceptance rate and very high stats, while others are 80% with much lower stats. I think if VT didn’t admit by major their stats would be much higher and admit rate lower. There are very qualified candidates turned away each year due to the major they applied to. All 3 are amazing schools, that are a difficult admit.

The demand for VT ComSci/Eng. is greater than the demand for W&M (anything). Yes, there are people who really prefer what W&M offers, but their numbers are significantly less than the number of people who want a CS/Eng degree from VT.

The world is being taken over (has been taken over) by CS people. I don't even thing Engineering is really very hot. If you look at what the TJHSST graduates are planning to study in college it seems that the VAST VAST majority are all planning to study CS in college. You don't see hardly any actual Engineering majors, doctors, Physics, Chemistry. It's scary and depressing that the kids who would have been going into those majors 15 yrs ago are almost ALL pursuing computer science now. We still need people in the hard sciences (and the soft sciences too!).

For Virginians, VT and W&M are practically peer schools right below UVA.
Some Engineering majors at VT are considered peer to UVA.

Also, many kids just don’t like the vibe at W&M and don’t even apply. For certain students W&M is amazing. None of my DC’s friends applied to W&M. Most applied to UVA and VT.

What's the vibe that they don't like? Honest question from mom of potential applicant...

DS didn’t apply. The reputation is that the students don’t really party and have social fun. The school environment is very liberal and predominantly female. It’s liberal arts based and not as strong for hard sciences.

From my experience, a colleague’s son went a hated it there. I know two other women who went there and neither went to many parties with drinking. I

My DS is probably going to ED there and he’s hoping it’s true It’s not a party school! So, for some kids that’s positive about the vibe. I don’t think it’s true that it’s bad in sciences. I think the sciences are strong just that it’s not an engineering and CS school. I think bio, chem and physics are supposed to be good.
