I think only the trolls on DCUM think about covid and social distancing anymore. I can't even imagine worrying about someone having a cold - or covid for that matter.

This is why people need to mask and eat outside. SO many thanksgiving superspreader events that are going to overwhelm the already overwhelmed hospitals. You don't *need* to have big parties for every holiday. So selfish. Good job y'all.

No gathering is risk-free, and the more people you have, the more you multiply the risk. This could've happened with zero symptomatic people at the gathering, based on incubation periods for various viruses. I have a horrible stomach virus today and clearly caught it over thanksgiving but no one had symptoms while interacting with each other.

But a lot of people are selfish, so if you go to a large dinner like that, there is a good chance there will be at least one jerk who thinks their company is worth exposing everyone to their cold or other illness.

This is why it’s a good idea to push for outdoor gatherings. I would have masked indoors, made everyone in my household mask, stay outside as much as possible, and eat outside.

That relative could have masked. Your host could have taken steps with ventilation, requiring everyone to test before gathering, and encourage mask use. That cold could become something else--that is why we take precautions and we should have been doing them all along. Layered mitigation b/c nothing is perfect, but more layers the better.

Right? Pre-covid, if anyone had said they weren't coming because of a cold, it would have been viewed as an excuse not to come.

That said, as someone with kids in school/childcare, I've become pretty conservative myself in these types of situations because our daycare is excluding for a lot more than it used to, and I assume others are as well. So if we were to attend a gathering with my sister and her young kids, we'd probably stay home for a cold to avoid getting them sick. But I wouldn't expect anyone without daycare-aged children to think this way. Covid has made everything weird.

DP, but by almost all objective metrics, the world is in an upward spiral. And I’m pretty sure that if it were to start trending downward, it would not be because someone came to family dinner with a cold.

Everyone has a different line, OP. I wouldn’t attend Thanksgiving with a cold, and I want other people to cancel if they have a cold, but almost NO ONE has the same line as me.

I think our lines depend, in part, on how inconvenient it is for us to be sick. Certainly immune compromised people have more strict lines but also people with kids in daycare that still have exclusions for covid symptoms have more strict lines, single parents might have more strict lines, someone who is out of sick leave at work will have a more strict line, etc.

Do your kids go to school? If so, they are surrounded by other sick kids every day. Same situation. It’s life.
