I’m not sure what kind of 5-year-old you have, but even my speech-delayed child with ASD asks about everything, provided he's interested.
Though, I think you’re also overestimating how much they’d think about what’s going on in a video game unless they’re actually interested in it.
A normal one who asks some questions and likely thinks many more in his head. My 5yo asks so many questions that constantly remind me how much little kids need to be taught, such as the questions I posted above. He's asked questions about whether dinosaurs are real. And whether there are any in our city. And whether there are monsters. And whether giants are real. And whether bears would eat him. All of this come from his consuming normal books/stories/movies intended for children his age that I can only imagine what would be going on inside his head if he saw things that were very much age inappropriate. Do I think he asks me about all his fears? No, I'd never be that naïve. I remember being afraid of things as a child and not telling my parents. (And please, before you jump to any strange conclusions based on that, I had a perfectly normal childhood.)

That needs to be done while the kids are asleep (like my DH does) or in a different room if they're awake.
