It is here boy wrong to force a 5th grader to recite religious passages out loud for a religion they don’t practice. This is horrible. It’s not granny sharing her religious beliefs it’s forcing them.The child has a right to say no.
I would tell your mother that this is never acceptable and that there will be no more unsupervised visits. She can connect with her grand child during group events but she doesn’t get to be alone with them or any other children you may have. I would also warn any other siblings or cousins f she has access to their kids and have decided not to be practicing Catholics.

I believe you OP. My own mother did not do this, but I can't tell you the number of times I had to hear about my brother not baptizing his kids, to include her joking that she was going to get some holy water and baptize them when they were alone. She didn't do that, but I get it.
This is a huge breach of trust and crashing through boundaries. I think for me it would be a sit down with my mom, possibly with my husband there as well, and telling her that she doesn't have to like what I've chosen as an adult, but she has to accept it.
If she wanted to take your son to church, in the open, I'd probably argue that you should let her. But this sneaking around and asking him to keep the Bible reading secret is a no go.

(My grandmother baptized me in the hospital when I was born with some serious medical issues)
The difference here is this is not an extreme or emergency situation which is requirement for a valid baptism by a lay person. “Just because she wants to” is not appropriate nor valid.
It is valid but canonically irregular (illicit).

Np here. My inlaws planned on doing the exact same thing and brought "holy" water to my home the minute my kids were out of the nicu. Even if it isnt an official baptism, there is so much ignorance by people about their own religions that this type of crap comes up. My ils are horrible people and barely go to church yet their religion became a hill to die on. They threw a fit at my marriage because we were not going to have a full mass at the wedding. They ruined our relationship but they live for drama so it wasn't really surprising.
