FCPS should follow the same calendar as the federal government as those are the minimum overlapping holidays for all industries. The teacher work days are silly and should be set up for 2 days by having half of the teachers do one day and the other half the other so the children can still attend school and alternate classes for the teachers taking the work day.

Completely agree. The hypocrisy is mind boggling.
I'm not a fan either as a working parent, but I hardly see it as hypocrisy to not want public schools entangled with Christianity. The major christian holiday is still the most significant break. I don't want any religion to be taught or promoted in publics schools - that is what a private parochial is for.

I like the days off. The calendar was put out months ago and my spouse and I set a schedule to cover childcare while school is closed. My daughter came home on Friday asking about what Diwali was so we spent some time looking up information about it, giving her more appreciation for other cultures and their traditions. If we are going to have a full 2 weeks off where those celebrating Christmas can travel to see family, the least we can do is allow a few more prominent minority religions in the area one or two days to observe their own holidays. I personally would rather move winter break back to mid/late January at the end of the 2nd quarter and just give the federal holidays of Christmas Day and New Years Day off but I know that would never fly.
As for people saying just have religious holidays be days with no tests/quizzes, that has been the suggestion for years but ask any Jewish person how well it was followed.

Maybe Public Schools should have a sensible schedule. I don't think that we have a month left this year were the kids have a full week of school every week. We have a few were there is only one short week but most have 2-3 weeks that are off or shortened. Say what you will about diversity but many kids need a more stable schedule.
Between Teacher Workdays and Religious holidays and Federal Holidays the kids are out of school in a way that is disruptive. Something needs to change. And yes, I filled out the survey. And I have looked at the survey results and it sure as hell looks to me like most parents are not happy with the schedule.

And then time off so not a full month of school. The Winter Holiday is normal but the disruptions in September and October are new. January and February are traditionally a mess because it is near impossible to get back into a routine due to the various Federal Holidays and then snow days. My kid is fine but he doesn't have any issues and is chill and goes with the flow well. My friends kid with anxiety and ADHD is having issues with refusal this year because of all the disruptions. I can only imagine the trouble that kids with executive functioning issues are having because there are consistent changes to schedules.
It is unnecessary. Make these days O days where there are no tests or homework or assignments due. Let people who want to miss, miss without punishment, but stop disrupting the routines that are needed for lots of kids.
And if your high school kid needs the extra time to do the work and is stressed about the work load, revisit your kids workload.
Seeing as how they need to show rigor to get into a decent college and get merit, no!
Your kid will get into college but maybe not a top 25 school. If your kid is that stressed over school, then the rigor is too much for them. Be more worried about your kids ability and mental well being then prestige of the school.

My ADHD kid with EF issues welcomes the break. Her HS schedule is very demanding.

Working parents with young kinds actually have to pay $100+ for camps every single time there is a random school holiday. I'm not allowed to wfh while caring for my children. These holidays seem to be pushed by rich families with SAHMs.
