The Goldfinch was compelling in so many ways, but she needed a forceful editor to make her cut at least 1/3 of the book.

I loved The Goldfinch just the way it was!

I totally agree. It took me a while to catch on that I hate every Oprah book recommendation. They are sapping sucky lame stories.

Bear Town. What a yawn. It took forever for anything interesting to happen. I wish I could get that time back.

With novels that have been translated, I often wonder if I’d have different impressions of the works if I had the language skills to read them as they were originally written.

Agreed. I read the first one and then didn't continue on. They sounded like they should be perfect for me.

I only got about 2/3 through it before I stopped wasting my time.

That’s interesting. I thought that the first half or so was reasonably well-written and compelling. I thought the parts that covered the time after he went to law school were much less detailed, much less insightful, and descended into a polemic screed.

Yes, and also Educated.

The Last Thing He Told Me was TERRIBLE. I do not understand why that book was such a huge success!

I hated TTW, too! Also The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. I was so frustrated by Addie, and her seven freckles.

N.K. Jemison would typically be my style, but The Fifth Season just went over my head. I couldn’t follow the story and thought the characters were forgettable.
