Our school used to allow treats to be sent in pre-COVID but stopped after. They always had a rule that items must be store-bought. Now they just do announcements and a pencil from the principal. Lower grades have a paper birthday crown that the kids can wear.

I honestly think its fine. Would it be great for each birthday to be celebrated with a cookie for each kid, yes. But the problem is, some parents go over the top so its not equitable. I've had my kids come home and say, we had some fruit snacks for Larla's birthday and others who gave out goody bags. You have to draw the line somewhere and in the older grades, it is disruptive.

Our school does blow it out for Halloween though--parents would lose it if they changed that at our school.

That’s pretty clear. Our elementary schools here in MCPS are so much worse now. Kids are acting out, no sense of community, our test scores stink.

Definitely better in my day. Everyone knew their place and were kept in it.
