That is absolutely terrible advice to someone with a kid trying out for Burke and SYA. And really any FCYBL team. Who has time to drive to DC from Fairfax for 10-14 year old's practice twice a week all winter long?

Right, and it is a money loser with a lot of carrying costs.
The CYA board of directors on the basketball side needs an overhaul.

We tried out for three, in zip code for two. It looks like a couple might field two teams so we’ll see. She keeps asking so this will be a good lesson in patience and possibly rejection.

SYA didn't have a team for girls this age last year (5th) so I would think she has a chance even if she isn't very good as there would be basically 8-9 open roster spots. Good luck!

What happens is, they offer spots to the first 10 or so kids. Once those have registered, they offer spots to the second team-if there is one.
Once the first and second teams are full, they send out the rejections (if they are well run). So they could have 9 kids registered, waiting on the 10th and your kid could be #11. Or #50.
