Neither. I'd pick neither!

It's like choosing between the lesser of evils - better high schools (MoCo) versus better in-state colleges (Arlington).

Instead, I'd rather live in McLean, Falls Church (22046), or Vienna (near Old Courthouse Rd to avoid 123). Then you get good schools + in-state colleges, with a decent commute.

If you move every time a new politician takes office, you'll be moving a lot. The politics of the current Va. governor are a trivial consideration for most rational people, who are much more impacted in their day to day lives by issues like transportation infrastructure, taxes, school system quality and availability (including at the university level), crime, and issues other than which way right/left political winds are currently blowing in Richmond.

In Maryland, on the other hand, it's likely the political landscape will remain strongly to the left indefinitely, if that's what floats your boat.

There is not a ton of crime in arlington. Hardly. There are the drunk fights in bars in Clarendon and car hackings in pentagon city. Arlington is a very safe place to live. I probably wouldn’t want to live on culpepper st, but other than that, I’d live almost anywhere in arlington and feel safe.


Arlington stopped tracking and reporting property crimes like 2 years ago. Where have you been?
There are hundreds of car break ins EVERY day that they do not put into county stats. Only over some amount like 1000 in value or 5000 or something ridiculous is recorded.

I believe that ACPS are the Alexandria schools. APS is Arlington. Arlington schools aren't perfect, but I'd take them over Alexandria!

DP. South Arlington low level crime never bothered people but they panicked when crime came to North Arlington in the form of car jackings, assaults, catalytic converters thefts, houses burgled for car keys that were then stolen, and such a large number of thefts from unlocked cars and autos that flashing Road signs tell people to lock their cars.

Criminals were emboldened by the Commonwealth's Attorney who believes more in equity than prosecuting crimes. Long time prosecutors left or were fired, and she has an inexperienced staff. The police are also short staffed and respond to only major crimes. As long as you are careful and can. Afford a property with a garage you are okay.

It is the price we pay to ensure that the rights of criminals (most of whom are from DC) are valued more than residents.

I’ve lived in both. For what you describe I’d pick Arlington. For one it’s much, much smaller, so has more of a neighborhood feel. You can’t go more than 20 minutes and still be in the county so with kids, you end up knowing lots of people because they’re in the same gymnastics class at age 2, in soccer together at 6, etc. And it’s a great place to raise a family- lots of parks and playgrounds, a huge parks and rec department with tons of kids stuff.
Also there aren’t big housing developments the way there are in MoCo. Arlington is mostly a grid with a few commercial streets and then everything else residential. So lots of places are walkable to metro and shops, which you won’t find in much of MoCo.
The schools are for the most part good. They struggled during the pandemic and lots fled to privates, but that means many schools aren’t overcrowded anymore.
