I feel genuinely sorry for the friend. I guess I can understand why they felt they needed to bail him out to keep him safe. But I would not want to have anything to do with the son or want to hear her defend him.

In your shoes, I would support a real friend. I would set boundaries, though. Not talk about the son. In the sense she should not seek validation from you that he's a good person. But can you be a shoulder to lean on? She's more a victim than an enabler, IMO. He had that **** in her house.

This stuff is a federal crime with like a 99 percent conviction rate. But OK. Let’s play sophomore year philosophy major regarding a person who OP had already said is screwed up, drunk and mentally ill.

Sure, it's unlikely. No, I'm not defending anyone involved in illegal activity. But we shouldn't make judgements about this particular individual as long as there is a nonzero possibility that he is innocent.

Honestly, he’s not my favorite person. He is a lifelong functioning alcoholic, a misogynistic and generally just loud and abrasive. My friend is very introverted, possibly even meek. This and she’ll be lucky if rest of family is not also implicated. I’d not bail my child out. I would see if there were ways to provide therapy and secure a therapist for myself. There isn't, if you don't bail them out. Having said that, I wouldn't have bailed him out if he were my kid and there was evidence for that charge.
