The clues to what happened are in details we don’t have.
What does OP mean when she says he was after her for two months for a date? Does that mean frequent texting and sharing personal communications, or did he just say “hey we should go out” a few times?
Who made the plans for the date; who paid?
Did he try to hit on OP; what was OP’s response?
If he principally was interested in the last item, he might have found an “easier target” in someone else. That’s actually a compliment to OP.

biggest lesson I learned in online dating is to text/email enough to gauge compatibility but not so much that you get too invested in something not real. after a week of back and forth, I want to meet for a drink, not conduct an endless epistolary romance. Chemistry in person is really important and you can't always sense that online.

Yeah or he had second thoughts about the chemistry. That's why you don't text for long. It's easy to get lost in an ascribed feel and then when you meet and they're different, it sucks.
