It was a merger of the Western Reserve University and the Case Institute of Technology. Leaders or admin tried to brand the school as just Case, with the WRU part of the name deemphasized, which honestly would have probably been a good idea along with the right branding strategy, but I think alumni reacted poorly and this nomenclature was dropped


Before Northern Ohio was Ohio, the land was claimed by Connecticut as its "Western Reserve", hence the name of the school.
