Depends on the setting. I call our vet 'Dr. Larla' but I would be horrified if she jumped into a conversation with human medical advice and represented herself as just Dr. Larla.

I have a PhD in a medical field and call myself Dr. so-and-so at work, but would never offer medical advice, especially paired with 'Dr.'. I have no issue with a PharmD representing themselves as Dr. if they are practicing within the scope of their work, but they shouldn't be overstepping and need to make sure the patient understands their role relative to the care team.

The check-the-box inflation in the education field is real, people. There is no bar lower than getting a “doctorate” in education.

For everyone coming in afterwards with their anecdote of their PhD in education from Harvard – there’ are 999 from schools with medium too bad course content and very low dissertation standards. If you don’t believe me – just read them!
