Does anyone care? Well, Duke was spamming social media about her speech. Presumably it would go on her CV as a prestigious and esteemed event, in addition to any articles or generated.

Apparently Duke required those who wanted to give the speech to submit an outline. The decision as to which speech would be given was based on the outline. So, the exact speech wasn't submitted for preapproval.

Molly Ivens spoke at my graduation -- she was pretty memorable But the students speeches are usually so boring and rote that I'm really surprised anyone remembered a past speech well enough to recognize it. They all basically use similar words to convey similar concepts.
I agree. I don’t remember any student speeches from my mid 2000’s graduation and I have also attended two other graduations. In most cases it’s the valedictorian and another funny or personable student. Do you put it in your resume if you give a speech? Does anyone even care post college? It seems like a lot of work if you have to plagiarize the speech.

The school also frames it this way too. They label means-based awards ex. "institutional scholarship: $50,000" on annual financial aid award letters.

Looking for inspiration, I googled commencement speeches, I liked this one and mine was inspired by it - I had no idea that constituted plagiarism or there would be a problem with it - the committee that approved it didn't alert me to any issues I assume they would have. There is little to no merit aid from Duke.
There aren’t many commencement speakers either. Near as I see the scholarship mentioned comes in 4 varieties, only the last being need based.

She may have gotten financial aid and/or taken out loans. Not sure this is the crux of the issue.
If another rich girl stole over $300,000 in college aid and awards intended for actual low-means needy students, that actually is a very serious issue. What happens if you steal $300,000 from your job? You're taken out in handcuffs.
