Blacksburg is a college town. The University dominates the town which leads the area to be much more liberal than SW VA as a whole.
It is definitely less conservative than Richmond or even UVA. UVA and U Richmond students are a bunch of little Republicans. A sea of Patagonia vests and bow ties.
Vineyard Vines, Lily, Patagonia, Bow ties and Republicans. Not at VT.
Very Southern Conservative. Good 'ol boys, wealthy republicans.
^^ U. Richmond & UVA. The dress is certainly very conservative. You could get zinged for not wearing the 'conservative preppy uniform'.
That may have been the case 30 years ago, but to my eyes it sure doesn't seem true any longer.
+1UVa students may dress for certain occasions (rush, formals, debate) but day to day? The women are in athleisure and the guys are in shorts/sweatpants and tshirts/hoodies. Based on what the women wear to evening football games for going out afterward, dear old Lily would roll in her grave.![]()
People on here need to stop saying outdated things like they’re still current. Whether it’s admissions to finding a roommate to attire.
Do they still have Foxfield?
Yes and what’s your point? Traditionally yes people go to horse races on preppy attire, ever hear if the Kentucky derby? Yes girls will be in sundresses and guys will probably be in khakis and polos. Day to day though, they wear ALOT of Lululemon and sweats. Boys wear whatever boys normally wear.
OK. Let's just say that many people include "go to horse races" as an activity.![]()
It was a culture shock for me to visit friends. No bow-ties or fancy hats for social events at my university.
VT was the opposite end of culture shock. Both are very Southern in different ways.
DP. I say this as kindly as possible: how long ago did you visit these universities? Because you seem woefully out of date.
It has been a few years for me, but I know multiple kids who've attended both schools in recent years and there are certainly still bow-ties and fancy hats at Foxfield. And there certainly is a "hick" element to VT.

I'm thinking it's been several decades since you've been to either school. Times, they are a'changin'!
I can confirm that the pp’s views are current.
I feel like people on this thread are absolutely terrified of being associated with anything labeled “conservative,” and they are grasping at straws and anecdotes when the vast majority of the country would spend five minutes on any Virginia college campus and call it conservative. It is what it is. No one is saying you are conservative because you went there, or your kid is conservative because they go there, but come on, people. I’ve lived in Va and voted blue my whole life. Our universities are more conservative than they are liberal.
I was simply responding to the PP who claimed there was a “hick” element at VT. That doesn’t ring true to me at all, and I’ve been there many times. As for “conservative,” that’s a plus for me, at least as a counterbalance to the over-the-top liberalism seen at some many schools today.
Just because you haven’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. The Ag school. Pickup trucks. Music. There is a rural Southern element. It is a state university in the rural South - it is what it is.
UVA has bow-tie Southern element.
If you’re not from the South it’s very obvious.

That is terrible hyperbole. Are you even from this area or are you someone trying to cause discontent among Americans?
There are extremist on both sides of the political equation, but the majority of people on both sides love their country and their fellow humans and just want our country to be the best it can be. I don't think any of us need this kind of hate and diatribe. I hope things in your country get better soon.
The tiki torch people were proven to be dems dressed up as republicans. Have you not seen the picture with their names and jobs on it?
Plus I don't think a rabidly conservative school would have this lawsuit: https://www.wsls.com/news/local/2021/04/19/former-virginia-tech-soccer-player-sues-coach-saying-he-forced-her-off-team-for-not-kneeling-before-a-game/
