I eat about 1/4 of what I cook. It’s probably 1 cup cooked. I store the extra with toppings (dash maple syrup, cinnamon, fruit, nuts). The leftover oats and topping can be reheated for anyone in the family, or myself, on other mornings.

So again, for me 1/4 cup dry is a serving. Or about 1 cup cooked.

I wanted to answer you further OP, I think you should eat as much or as little as you want. A change of 1/4 cup more or less isn’t going to make or break you. Eat enough to carry you to lunch. That’s the goal. If you ate 2 tbsp like your friend, you may not make it to lunch and eat convenience snacks. Eat it all if it helps you get it the next meal.

How can you eat 3 flakes in one sitting?! If I have more than 1, I feel overstuffed.

The secret is to not eat for 21 hours beforehand. Eat your 3 flakes between 2 and 5 pm and you should be good to go until the next afternoon and hopefully won't get too full.

I don’t think the amount of oatmeal you eat us much of an issue. The high fiber/low calorie ratio I think means that it’s one of the better way to fill your stomach. I think what is a matter of concern are what you flavor the oatmeal with. Sugar, honey, maple syrup, butter, cream, bacon, etc., can gave negative effects when used in excess. I think the difference between 1/2 c of oatmeal with a teaspoon if sugar and two cups of oatmeal with a teaspoon of sugar matters a lot less than 1/2 cup of oatmeal with one teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 cup oatmeal with two teaspoons of sugar.

FWIW, I generally add sugar, butter/margarine, and milk to my oatmeal. It’s delicious, almost like a pudding soup, but I don’t consider it particularly healthy. However, the last thing I worry about is adding extra oats to my serving.
