Another rich person in a massively unhappy marriage. So apparent.

Our daughter is pretty self sufficient but I’d like to have her accountable to an adult when we aren’t home.

If your boss brought his/her kids in and told you to take care of them for a few hours, you would be livid as this is not a part of your job. If I were employed as a housekeeper, babysitting is not a part of my job and I would not care how self sufficient the kid is because I do not want to be a babysitter. Job creep. A 12 year old should be able to get her own snack, do her homework, without any supervision. If she isn't then you have failed as a parent.

It’s not job creep if the responsibilities to keep an eye on the 12 yr old is stated clearly at interview and in the contract.

I’m sure you’re long gone, OP, but for $25 plus benefits, I’m sure you’ll find someone good.

I can't imagine there's enough to do to keep her busy 8 hours a day.

Lots of people just have higher standards than you, PP. I don’t mean to be snarky but my mother was a true old fashioned housewife and stayed busy all day. Our house was spotless and fresh, homemade meals were made daily. She washed our kitchen floor every single day and we never used a towel twice.

I wish my house was like that!

but some of what you're describing is really busy work. no one's kitchen floor needs to be washed every day. it's super wasteful to use a towel only one time. Your mom was filling up her activities to fill the time she had available.

It doesn’t matter what you think, PP. Using the same towel twice grosses my husband out. There is no right or wrong, just personal preferences for cleanliness. And with two toddlers and two dogs and meals made from scratch, our kitchen floor does need to be washed daily.

Guess your husband doesn’t care about the environment he’s leaving his children to inherit.

Yeah, because it’s such a disaster for the environment to do a full load of towels.

I bet you smell musty.

Do you guys poop every day? Shower? Brush your teeth? Have your meals? Exercise? Cleaning is in the same category of self-care. You are not doing anyone a favor by living in a trash heap. A dirty house impacts your mental health.

There's a lot of room between getting on your hands and knees to scrub the floors every day and "living in a trash heap."

But PP probably likes it on her hands and knees.

Don’t try to be clever, dear, it’s embarrassing for you.

+1 Reminds me of how the staff are kept busy on Downton Abbey polishing silver and ironing napkins.

-1. Real silver needs to be polished frequently and they didn’t have permapress napkins.

Why is it so hard for you both to understand that some people have higher standards of cleanliness than you do?

You say higher standards, I say neuroticism and undiagnosed anxiety disorder.

You clearly live in a small house. I say your house smells and you’re a slob. How’s judgement working out for you?

I don’t think anyone who employs someone else to do all their cleaning can judge other people about their cleaning standards. If you clean your house yourself to your high standards, kudos to you. If you just throw money at the problem and then sneer at those who can’t afford to do the same, I’ve got no respect for you.

We did not bathe every day until we were about 12/13 -- puberty.

We bathed every day and mopped kitchen floor once a week. I know of no one who mopped their floors every day. Very strange.

My mom washed her kitchen floor every day on her hands and knees. My sister now does the same. I used to, and then had a bunch of kids and got a dog and really need to!, but no longer do. I kind of gave up. I’d love a housekeeper to wash my floor every day. That would be like a dream! (But I bet they don’t do it on their hands and knees…)

What do you do to get your floors so dirty?

NP, but I have a preschooler, a baby a pet, and a pretty central kitchen

^^You're comparing apples to oranges.

OP and spouse and 12 yr old are out of the house the majority of the day, no mention of a pet (shedding or otherwise), and presumably all 3 of them self sufficient people.

Your scenario is exactly the opposite.

Doesn’t matter!!! OP is cleaner and has higher standards than you! And probably has a bigger house. Lots of rich people have full time housekeepers who don’t even cook or do errands.

+1. Some people just have higher standards.

I guess I'm living in filth since I use a towel three times before washing it and only vacuum/mop the floors once a week. How are you getting things so dirty in your house that the floors need cleaning every day? Aren't you clean from the shower when you use the towel?
