You might find more career opportunities in engineering at Pitt but should not have a problem getting a job graduating from JMU.

I am not sure if it is worth paying out of state to go to Pitt Engineering. If companies did not heavily recruit from JMU in that area, than I would consider going to Pitt.

JMU engineering is general. If you are looking for instate alternative to VT, I would look at VCU over JMU, unless the general program suits your kid. Curious to know where those kids end up after graduation.

JMU is general engineering, project based and hands on from the beginning. Also, weed out classes at other schools, like chemistry, are smaller at JMU with something like 40 students per section instead of 300. But it’s there’s not a deep research base there, or the number of labs or the variety of engineering. I’m guess Pitt has way more research going on, and interesting engineering labs. So it depends what she wants. If it’s a genuine interest, she can launch herself from anywhere, but the path may be different.

They’re so different that it is hard to believe that students could be torn between the two. Of course Pitt is a better school, but lots of students want the college town environment. It’s not life or death.
