I have also seen estimates for a regular decision acceptance rate 1-2 percent range (overall rate in the 5-6 percent rate)...which is amazing. I think it was something like 20 percent last year. But, if it's true that they received 90K applications, that would seem right--that would be a huge increase in applications (they had something like 75K last year) and they had a much higher yield last year than prior years, leading to some housing issues. As a result, they need a smaller-than-normal class this fall. Combine those three factors (higher yield, smaller class, more applications) and the acceptance rate plummets.

Where is the 90K number being reported? Official or rumor?

My kid lived in on-campus housing during his coop semester two years ago. He's since moved off-campus, but yes, coop students can stay in university housing.

There is also a healthy sublet market since there are so many students coming and going for various reasons including co-op.

I think the question is basically if dorm spaces are available for students on COOP periods.

On campus housing assignments are for the full year. Not just for co-op which is 6 months. When you’re on-campus, and your co-op is not in Boston, you are let out of your housing contract. Easy peasy. If you’re off-campus, and your co-op is outside of Boston, you find someone to sublet your space.

It’s a city with city rates. Actually, Covid caused rental rates to decrease nationwide. My kid is renting for the second year in off campus apartment. Anecdotally, we haven’t seen rents increase because of Covid.
