I have a kid at a college in another state that didn't require the vaccine for anyone attending. They do require masks inside of campus buildings except when eating/drinking.

Anyway, I was worried about it and really stressed over sending him (haha, I know, I couldn't really prevent him, but you know, a mother's stress), but it was his first semester of college and he was beyond excited to start the next phase of his life. He basically told me, "listen, I'm vaccinated and I always wear a mask. Trust me to make good decisions."

It was hard but I did. I stopped stressing and worrying so much. So far, so good. I check the campus dashboard numbers from time to time and they aren't bad.

I just checked today (yesterday's numbers):

Son's school:
Active cases: 107
New positive: 17
Undergrads: 21,000

Comparing with UVA who has a vaccine mandate right now:
Active cases: 376
New cases: 51
Undergrads: 18,000

My son says he doesn't have any direct friends who are not vaccinated. He knows of some people who aren't but he just operates under the assumption that when encountering a new person, they aren't vaccinated until he finds out otherwise.

How do vaccines get added to the list of mandated vaccinations?

Does VDH regularly update the list and that gets passed by the GA?

So what happens next fall/winter when everyone’s vaccine has worn off and not everyone goes and gets a new one, and the latest variant is running rampant? (Hopefully that doesn’t happen but I have no faith that this thing is going to end anytime soon). It’s going to create a whole mess for universities. Can’t wait to try to run in person classes with students out sick or quarantining all the time, asking if they can attend via Zoom (no our classrooms are not outfitted for this) and make up work that can’t be easily recreated online. In person campus events will get cancelled too if a bunch of people are sick. Oh and then there’s the students who will no longer feel comfortable attending class but the university will tell us to “accommodate” then (with no explanation of what that means) so they don’t lose tuition money. I love when these decisions get made by people who don’t have to deal with the fallout. If in person education is so important (which I believe it is) maybe don’t make decisions that make it harder to do.

You're actually using a sample size of six to make your case? The point is, most vaxxed people will get Omicron at some point. If they've been boosted, it'll likely be very mild. If they've been vaxxed, they won't be that sick. If you've got your booster, then why do you care what other people choose to do?

So wait - you're saying that vaccine requirements which have been VOTED INTO LAW are somehow equal to a vaccine requirement that HAS NOT been voted into law? Tell you what. Why don't you lobby your VA rep. to vote on making Covid vaccines required by law. Unless/until the General Assembly votes to do this, there is NO LAW that requires Covid vaccines.

Why would he do that? Those requirements are law - voted on by the General Assembly. Do you understand how this works? If the GA votes to include Covid vaccinations, then they'll be required. Get it?

+1. With a DS who's commuting to college in DC while living home with us in DC he's the most likely to get it as the rest of us are teleworking. We're all vaxxed and boosted. He gets tested every two weeks and the rest of us more sporadically. None of us have ever tested positive or had any symptoms.
