I don't think Paloma is divisive, I think DCUM only likes "ethnic" names if the ethnicity screams Whitey Von Whiterson. They'll recommend Aoife and Linnea and then tell you "ugh, naming a kid Paloma is like naming her Margarita" without even realizing they're outing themselves as ignorant drunks.


You can recognize that the name Paloma is the same as an alcoholic beverage without being an ignorant drunk.

OP, I like Juliet a lot.


DP. Thinking that a child named Paloma is named after a cocktail would indeed make you sound like an ignorant drunk. I assume the cocktail was either named after a woman or after the bird, but either way the name far predates the cocktail. I feel the same about the name Mercedes.

I know it's been said, but I agree. It's not a stretch. Your child is Hispanic. There's no question of appropriation here because it is part of her ethnicity/culture. Imo, Paloma is a beautiful name, as is Juliet. You can't go wrong with either name, OP. Maybe choose one arbitrarily and start referring to the baby by that name, then switch names. See what feels right to both of you. Might not help, but maybe it will.

Well Paloma is a Spanish name most popular in Spain, a country full of white people, so perhaps it's you outing yourself.

The only names I like on your list are Juliet and Miranda. Of those to Juliet is more to my liking. I’m not into the name Paloma and Alice is an old lady name to me. Gwendolyn is also way too frilly.

I love Alice, Gwendolyn (Wendy in particular) and Paloma (my daughter has a Paloma called “Lola” in her class and she’s absolutely adorable). Are there middle names you like/family members to honor that we could look at?
