None of the other counties are canceling sports. This is just to appease the Arlington nuts

APS woke up a sleeping giant

So I guess you can quibble with my wording, but what I meant is it's not a desperate hospital situation here in Arlington right now. And I don't think kids' activities are going to be the tipping point, esp. as many others have pointed out when we haven't taken other drastic steps like closing indoor dining. Which, by the way, I won't eat indoors right now, but I will let my kids play basketball with masks on.
This pretty much says it all about Arlington parents. PP will protect themselves by not eating indoors, but will force coaches, refs and others to face additional exposure by forcing them to hold games. Selfish.
Because you can wear a mask indoors while playing, but you can't while eating! Honestly, people.
And anyone who thinks this closure, once it happens, "will only last two weeks," is kidding themselves.
Also, I think this is a fair question: Which is more likely?
a) this two week closure of a small, select set of activities that largely affect teens in Arlington will result in a saved life from COVID
b) this significant disruption, yet again, to "normal" activities for our teens will harm mental health and increase depression and the risk that one of our teens will commit suicide
From my perspective, "B" is much more likely, and it's not even close.

They postponed stuff for kids only. They also sent an email saying rec centers open for adults after the holiday on Jan 3rd. Adults can continue to catch and spread Covid. Two different standards.
THAT is just wrong policy. They're either acting like only kids are catching and spreading COVID; or they're acting to protect only kids. Not that those kids would be protected from their parents and other adult contacts going to the gym.
Is the county doing anything to limit indoor bar gatherings for NYE? I see you can buy tickets for events in Clarendon. Why is that okay but all activities for kids need to be postponed? Aren't 20 somethings the least vaccinated/boosted group in Arlington?

Teachers and staff might need to stay after school for sports and clubs as well and perhaps the 2 weeks was to not overwhelm teachers and staff with extra responsibilities who might be struggling with other issues at home or something like that. Just a thought.

It is actually the least-entitled kids who are hurt the most by this decision. There are a lot of kids in this county who rely on APS extracurricular activities to build their resume for college applications and career opportunities. And maybe two weeks doesn't seem like a big deal, but many MS and HS activities are seasonal and 2 weeks is huge for kids preparing for winter competitions-- and not just sports, but also things like robotics and STEM team competitions, Model United Nations, etc. Many of these activities don't carry any more risk than kids being in the classroom. The decision to cancel everything across the board is arbitrary and lazy, and certainly not based on science.
Funny then that only the entitled rich parents are complaining.
Tell that to the kids at Wakefield. Your response is totally out of touch with the reality of what many kids across the entire county are feeling right now.
