A former track and field coach, security assistant and paraeducator at Northwood High School is expected to serve one year in prison and will be listed as a sex offender for life after he was sentenced Wednesday for the sexual abuse of a student, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Michael McAuliffe sentenced Giovanni Reumante, 34, of Takoma Park to five years, with all but one year suspended, and three years of supervised probation upon release, the State’s Attorney’s Office said in a press release. As part of a plea agreement, Reumante waived two years of credit for time served.
Reumante pleaded guilty to the sexual abuse of a minor on Nov. 1, 2022, according to the release.

Reumante was a Cross Country and Track coach who traveled out of state for overnight trips with Northwood High School students. MCPS should be concerned with that fact and re-examine the protocols for when teams travel or even if teams should be allowed to travel overnight.
The timing of the COVID travel ban happens to align with a major track meet in Virginia Beach that several MCPS track teams were already registered to compete. Extending the travel ban date to January 16th prohibits MCPS track teams from participating in this meet.

But he was sexually abusing a student inside of a school building. No travel needed.

It was a joke

This isn't hard to figure out.
For the hundredth time MCPS does NOT do a background check on anyone. If there is a former employer in the education field a phone call is made plus the routine NCIC check which might show previous arrests. No more. No less. A proper background check can take up to a year. No way that MCPS can do that with 2000 new hires per year.
This is an example of MCPS not doing a comprehensive background check:

I am not sure what you consider a background check. I was fingerprinted, had my previous employer called and they searched for a criminal record on me. If that is not a background check, I am not sure what you consider acceptable.
