Yep. I’ll go further. It should be random. It’s already close to arbitrary. Basically, almost any system for college admissions would be better than the one currently in place.

I googled only because I graduated from Tulane approx 100 years ago (and likely wouldn’t get in today), but the acceptance rate is 11% (2020). Not as selective as the Ivies but moreso than NYU which is 21%. It’s certainly getting more selective over time. Congrats to all!!

Maybe I am dating myself, but I figured a national qualification meant something like the Scripps Spelling Bee champion or the Regeneron Science Talent finalist/winner. Some kind of national academic competition.

This is true at every Big 3 and other DC private - NCS/STA, Sidwell, Maret, Potomac, etc.
The legacy kids are getting into the legacy schools. Assuming the kids have the grades - no small feat in and of itself, of course - this is still the biggest factor.
My kid is a legacy admit and I totally agree. That said, they were extremely driven, worked their a$$ off for four years, their teachers loved them, and they had a number of stellar, national-level qualifications. Our younger kid is the opposite and will not be applying because the legacy will mean zero.
Curious about the stellar, national level qualifications. Could you be more specific?
I know it sounds douchey but it's sort of a weird combination and could possibly out DC so I'd rather not say. Not sports, though.

I think you have incomplete information. As of now, ones that I have heard of are: Harvard (3), Yale (2), Penn (3), Princeton (1), Cornell (1), Brown (1), Stanford (1), Dartmouth (2 or 3), Duke (3), NYU (1). Since these are EDs (or EAs in a few cases), these are the no. of individual students, not acceptances (i.e. not multiple acceptances of the same student). A few might be legacy/athlete, but not a majority. There are several others in top 30 places like Tulane, Tufts, and other great schools. A few more schools will be out with their EDs today.

From what I've heard, yes I think just over half of ED admits are legacy for Ivies (2 or 3 Harvard, 2 Yale, 2 Cornell, 2 Princeton, 1 Brown, 1 Dartmouth, 2 or 3 Penn). 1 Stanford, 2 Duke. There are at least 5 to the seven sisters - Barnard, Smith and Wellesley. 2 NYU, Tulane, one or more into Carleton, Bates, Hamilton, and at least 1 Wesleyan. There are others. What I see is that about 20% of the senior class is already in to quite competitive colleges, which is quite a contrast to what happened last year at this time.
The early admits from NCS this year are stellar. I think there are low teens already accepted into Ivys. This does seem a big departure from last year when there were a lot of deferrals. I have no idea if their parents are legacy or not, but regardless NCS is a relatively small school, so the number of girls going to great schools is impressive. Parent of non-athlete, non-legacy, with a DC not in the Ivy League range. I am very happy for all kids in the area who got into great schools (Ivy or not). We all know how hard they work and we all know that there are many great schools out there. Congratulations to all.
