It's not just for local elections though as state and federal elections often happen at the same time - such as for presidential elections.

So how will that work - just ask the non-citizen voter to use the honor system and only vote for the local issues/candidates?

NYC has many foreign property owners who likely want a say in the local government’s making laws that affect them.

DP here. Sounds like you’re the dummy. Non-citizens absolutely do pay taxes. My family immigrated here legally and had to pay taxes for decades before becoming US citizens.

My grandmother moved here from another country and got free medical care and money from the government for decades. I can own that this happens. You should try.

I confirm this. Many elderly people move here via family reunification and get free medical care, food stamps, and subsidized housing. Esp in CA and NY.

But then they are by definition joining a family that does pay taxes.

Not the same as paying into SS your whole life and then collecting from it.

I live in the suburbs and there seems to be a growing population of older Chinese immigrants nearby, as I’ve noticed hanging out near public housing and food distribution lines. Has it always been this way or is this an uptick? They don’t seem to have families taking care of them.

I’m quite liberal and am 💯 against giving non-citizens voting rights, anywhere. It basically dilutes the need to ever provide a pathway to citizenship. What a waste of energy on NYC Dems when they could be working to flip the US House and get real legislation. So F-ing shortsighted.

The Adams administration is mulling its next steps on noncitizen voting in New York City after a state appeals court on Wednesday ruled that the plan violates the state Constitution.

Paul Wooten, an associate justice of the Appellate Division for the state’s Second Judicial Department, upheld a 2022 decision by a Richmond County Supreme Court judge striking down the law. The appeals court weighed in on the case following an appeal from Mayor Eric Adams’ administration; it’s not clear whether Adams would pursue another appeal.

“We determine that this local law was enacted in violation of the New York State Constitution and Municipal Home Rule Law, and thus, must be declared null and void,” Wooten wrote, in the ruling.

Specifically, Wooten led a three-to-one ruling siding with the lower court in determining that when the state Constitution says “every citizen shall be entitled to vote at every election for all officers elected by the people,” it is only referring to US citizens and does not include non-citizens. Furthermore, they found the City Council’s passage of non-citizen voting violated the Home Rule Law, because it stipulates that local elections can only be changed through ballot referendums.

City Law Department spokesperson Nicholas Paolucci, in a statement, said the city is “reviewing the court’s decision and evaluating next steps.”

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., announced on Sunday that she had obtained a copy of a contract between New York City’s Department of Social Services and Homes for the Homeless, a nonprofit that has been contracted to build emergency migrant shelters as the border crisis depletes the city’s resources.

In an appendix of that contract, a copy of which was obtained by Fox News Digital, the city appears to require contractors to provide copies of voter registration forms for migrants at their shelters, Malliotakis said.

The city has denied that it requires migrant shelters to provide voter registration information to illegal immigrants.

A section of the appendix states that contractors who have "regular contact with the public in the daily administration of its business" must "provide and distribute voter registration forms to all persons together with written applications for services, renewal, or recertification for services and change of address relating to such services."

"Such voter registration forms shall be provided to the Contractor by the City. The Contractor should be prepared to provide forms written in Spanish or Chinese, and shall obtain a sufficient supply of such forms from the City," the file stated.

Another section of the same appendix appears to forbid the shelter from inquiring about immigration status unless specifically required.

However, a spokesperson for the NYC Department of Social Services told Fox News Digital that the provision applies to "eligible clients" in shelter housing.

"These allegations are false and baseless. DHS is legally required to include language around voter registration in shelter contracts and this guidance applies only to eligible clients who are citizens, and would clearly not apply to asylum seekers in shelter," the spokesperson said.

The City Council passed a law in 2021 to allow noncitizen residents to vote in local elections, but it was overturned by a New York state judge in July 2022.

I was an expat for a long time in other countries and never demanded voting rights. After all, why? I wasn't a citizen, even if I paid taxes.

Citizenship isn't a right. It's a privilege. People too easily forget it.

As it is, in the UK non citizens can vote in local council elections, but not national elections for Parliament.
