Well that's a problem. I do think the tide is shifting. At least my friends in LA are almost uniformly outraged at what's going on. They literally had to put out a citywide mandate because so many stores are being smashed and grabbed. When youre quite literally afraid of walking down the street and being shot for any reason because it's happening all over, people start being very critical of these "the poor criminals!" characterizations.
That's kind of sad, because it is difficult for the government to reverse cuts like that. LAPD took a $150M "defund the police" cut, and resignations and retirements are up by over 20% each. So the remaining officers are working overtime to make up for the losses, but are being given, like, IOUs for their overtime because the city can't pay. It's really difficult to reverse the effects of that, even if they put the funding back, because they need to be able to get funded, attract and train new talent, and start working normally again and that's going to take a while. This is sad both for the residents of LA who apparently have buyers remorse and also sad for the police who quit their jobs because they believed their services were no longer appreciated.

The reason I think this is that when businesses were burned down last summer, the reaction from the left was, well, insurance will cover it, no problem here. And the decriminalization of theft in California also seems to be a move toward treating property crime as a minor infraction. I'm not saying that this is evil or wrong, although I disagree. I'm just saying that Seth R's comment seems very on brand with "it's just stuff, who cares!" I don't think he's a bad person for saying it, it's a good perspective even if I don't think it is best for society. I'm really surprised at the reaction he's getting, considering it's a fairly mainstream view.
This isn't a real thing. California adjusted their threshold above which theft is a felony, but it's not even out of line with other states. Setting that threshold at approximately $1000 is very common (both higher and lower thresholds are out there too), and both felony and misdemeanor theft is criminal.

Yep, I call them "crimes of opportunity". I live in San Francisco and almost daily when I'm walking around downtown, tell someone "hey, your backpack is wide open." I don't hang my bag on the back of a chair unless there is no way anyone can walk behind me. I don't own a car anymore, but when I did (in another state) I always put my purse or bag on the floor of the passenger seat, not on the seat itself, and always took everything out of the car when I got out.
