I am a self described "dog parent". I use that term as "dog owner" feels odd as our puppy IS a member of our little family and she is her own little doggy-person. I am not delusional to think I have the same responsibilies that a real parent to a human child does. It's just an easy way to say I care for a living animal that lives in my home.
FWIW, I DO want children, badly. It just hasn't happened for me yet and I enjoy that I am able to use some of my maternal instincts in caring for my puppy.

I AM a childless "dog parent". I don't think I'm pathetic at all. But it is very obvious that underscoring a lot of these conversations is the belief that childless people who love their dogs are tragic/pathetic people.

Yes, I know. That is why I caveated by saying a biological mother, which is still how the vast majority of people have babies.

Again, this isn’t really a live and let live situation. The proliferation of dogs in public spaces they don’t really belong in hurts some people. And I believe the current situation is because people think their dogs are the same as children. They are not. I don't care if you have human kids, fur kids, fish kids, whatever. Just be respectful and not judgmental about what other people are doing with their lives and don't be hypocritical.
I have an aunt who did not have children by choice, vocally despised children for many years, but now has dogs. She is a fur mom, they are her fur babies, and the world revolves around them. Good for her, but I can't get past her negative attitude towards my kids in the past.

Don't you think that your observation about reddit could essentially boil down to:
- Boy don't young people know everything! Wait till they get older and have more experiences, then they'll be just like me.
- Wow people are wrong on the internet! And even when I tell them they're wrong they still keep insisting on being wrong!
- Gosh the internet sure does draw out people who say extreme things. I wonder if those people on Reddit really represent any kind of normal viewpoint - you know what, I bet they do!

Who would ever trust their dog with OP? I can't imagine the sister wanting to take her up on it. She'd probably kill the dog.

You're missing an opportunity here. Swap a week of full-time caring for your children with your sister-in-law for a week of watching her dogs. It doesn't matter if you change her mind or not, what difference does that make anyway, you will have had a week of vacation either way.
