For the record OP you are a saint for putting up with your MILs petty garbage while being so thoughtful. I hope your DH does the explaining as to the fact that HE doesn’t feel comfortable having them stay in the future.
Thing is, as long as I made arrangements for a sitter—my parents, my aunt/uncle, my cousin, one of our friends, my brother—it would never occur to him that his family needed “a turn.” I have gone out of my way to be “fair” about this sort of thing, and to make sure that our kids spend fairly equal time with both of our families. That stops now. From now on, if we go away for a night or a few nights, it’s going to be someone I can fully trust watching my kids. DH’s parents can visit when we are home, and we will still occasionally go on vacation with him. But I don’t even need to declare to DH or to MIL/FIL no more unsupervised visits. They will simply never be in our home alone again.
Pp here. This is totally reasonable. Honestly, if they won’t notice, then no need for your DH to make it a thing. You know your MIL will never change, so simply making this silent change is the high road. No point in confrontation. Again, sorry, this stinks and you are of course right this is ridiculously inappropriate even if the upshot is just a lack of chocolate.
But on the less high road, I have found myself worrying that eating all those chocolates at once might have been more than her slight figure can stand. Is that the start of a roll around her middle..?

They are things "you can easily order online" per my comment (and get in some stores, too).
Things you can easily order online or find locally in the DMV are likely not OP's chocolate.
Thus, I am well aware that Lake Champlain and Enstrom's are not OP's chocolate.

OP here. Thank you for understanding. She always asks if I’m on a diet (I am not overweight and only dieted once to lose pregnancy weight) and makes much of the fact that she’s so thin. She snoops and has control issues.

She once declined on our behalf when my aunt called her (we were visiting my mother but happened to be out at the time) to invite us to stay over for Christmas. I found out a few days later and was livid, and had to call my aunt back and say that yes of course we'd love to come. She's also obsessed with our weight and tries to physically grab us, the kids and I, and push us on the scale.

I think it’s more lighthearted. Heck, I love chocolate so I’m curious, too! Then again, I’ve been ordering custom boxes of See’s all pandemic, so perhaps my taste is suspect.
