I just got my 12 yr DD a phone. I had blocked app download but she worked around by accessing TikTok on Safari. I've since blocked it. There's just so much that can go wrong, particularly now with the FCPS challenges. She cried and pleaded but she's only 12 yr. I make the calls at this point. We'll reassess in a few years. TicTok is currently huge. It is easy to upload on it and it pays for content at about the same rates as Spotify and YouTube and Apple. It encourages short uploads (less than a minute) which is what you need for amateur folks and kids doing things like dances. A short YouTube. It may fade but not for another 5-10 years. It will be a question of whether the current 5-10 year olds continue on with the site or is there something new and better? Facebook, as an example, is long past done now for kids and young adults.

Only a truly negligent, absent, terrible parent would allow their child to use TikTok.

If your kid has TikTok on your phone (and it IS YOUR PHONE), delete it entirely.

I’m a hard no, as well. I have a 11 & 13 yo. Neither have it. The younger one wishes she did, and the older one is glad she doesn’t. It’s a giant time waste, and is one more thing contributing to the continued undoing of our kids’ minds. That sounds cheesy but I truly believe it. 👎

Just no....we held the line. DD 15 has it and I hate it. I have a younger daughter who tried to get it and made her delete it. Has a friend her age who has had it since age 10--its so inappropriate.

I don't think the comparison with AOL chat groups is great. AOL was never about posting videos to the whole world to see. Chatting vs TikTok videos is different.

Tiktok is getting more and more extreme.

We were warned about what crimes TikTok is planning by Fairfax County schools:
