Another dog lover and nearly everyone has dogs. No one has ever brought them to a holiday meal. Ever.

20 people plus their dogs in your new house? OP it is ok if some people don’t make it because they won’t separate from their dogs.

It's funny you say that. You must have missed this discussion https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/998489.page . The worst a$$holes in the comments are the dog owners. Though I must admit I stopped following that thread after page 7....

20 people already sounds insane and I am from a family of 7 kids.

I feel like every single year this question is posted and every year the responses are to say no dogs allowed. I’m a huge dog person and have brought my large dog to other people”s houses for thanksgiving—if told jot to bring the dog, I would likely skip, but generally only because those are relatives I don’t much care for and I was sort of looking for an excuse to skip anyway.
It’s your house, it’s a reasonable rule, and it’s a good way to thin the herd and give those who don’t really want to come a convenient excuse.

Did you read the thread? One dog is new to their family (and has not been at Turkey Day before) and the other family is new to this crowd....

You must be gracious if people do not want to attend. You don't get to decide how others spend their Thanksgiving. You can host any way you want. But they don't have to come.

You knew dogs have always been included before. You knew that. Don't pretend, now, you didn't.

Say sorry, no dogs. Say it verbally and in writing so they can’t claim you didn’t say it.

Same. I have a boarding place I love. Heck, I'm thinking of boarding my dog for Thanksgiving that I'm hosting, so I don't have to watch him around all the little kids.

I cannot even fathom a family Thanksgiving where any of my family members would dream of bringing their dogs. That is simply ridiculous.

Just say no, OP. My friend brings her dog everywhere. She knows when she visits, doggie stays outside. Set your boundaries now. You have a friends/family problem, not a doggie problem. Set the boundary now or you will be hosting a kennel every holiday for the rest of your life.

A responsible dog owner will find a boarding kennel for the animals. If they are coming from out of town and want to bring the dogs with them, they can find a kennel near you and pop out twice a day to visit the dogs and walk them.

If, for some compelling family reasons, you are backed into a corner and need to compromise, do you have a garage where the dogs can hole up for the few days?

Exactly, it's her new house. She's allowed to say no dogs. Dogs are not humans.

Find a doggie daycare nearby or a dog friendly air bnb. When you put the “no dogs” thing out there, offer these as alternatives. Just say your house is a pet free zone.

People who don’t understand why dogs aren’t invited have a skewed view of the damage and grossness dogs leave behind. If they like that, FINE. But it’s not ok to enforce on you.
