I remember the horrible ads-if you didn’t know his actual first name, you might have thought the man’s first name was “the liberal”

I think it is some of both. There are many Trump voters who are in the closet. They agree with him regarding discriminating based on race, sex, religion, you name it. However, they know they are are wrong in these beliefs so they keep their hate to themselves and quietly root for Trump to win. There are others who care for nothing more than their financial investments. If the market is high and good, they’re all in for Trump. If they start losing money in the market, well Trump’s gotta go. Their loyalty is to the dollar bill only.
I agree about this and worry about the closet racists. If there's any old North Carolinians like me out there, you might remember the Jesse Helms vs Harvey Gantt race. Seemed like Gantt would win until all the old closet racists went into the voting booth and pulled the level for the fossilized old racist Jesse Helms.
This got a fair amount of publicity very recently because it was mentioned in the Michael Jordan documentary on ESPN. There’s another famous race — I think for mayor of Los Angeles? — around the same time period, where the same thing happened.
It’s called “The Bradley Effect”. Tom Bradley longtime mayor of Los Angelas credited with cleaning up the city and moving it from perpetual debt to financial solvency ran for Governor of California. When people went into the poll booths on Election Day, the polls had Bradley well within the lead. However at the end of the night, it was clear that people lied and just could not bring themselves to vote for a Black man for governor despite his successes.
