This says the hearing was closed because he’s a juvenile, but I don’t see anything reporting the results of the hearing after this.

Hmm, it's funny that there are no updates on this killing. Why haven't they charged him as an adult, mental illness or not.

Also, how close to 18 is this kid? He's going to miss the "adult" cutoff on a technicality of how many months? That would be BS

It is quite difficult to imagine that swiping a family gun and cell phone, packing it and yourself into a car, driving across the county at 4:00 in the morning, managing to get into your girlfriend's home at that time and then remembering where you stash your gun quickly enough to kill two adults = "no chance of demonstrating that he had that kind of cognitive capacity at the time of the murders."

If he's tried as a juvenile, they generally won't be made public.

Trying a juvenile as an adult requires, among other things, a showing that the juvenile sufficient cognitive capacity to understand their crimes as an adult would. That's why you don't see 10 yos being charged as adults, kids generally need to get into their teens before courts will start considering them to have that kind of cognitive capacity. Depending on the nature of this boy's mental illness, the prosecutor may know that there's no chance of demonstrating that he had that kind of cognitive capacity at the time of the murders.

Anyone know about the detention center? Does this indicate that he has "recovered" from the gun shot to the head? The reports kept saying he was in critical condition for weeks. I don't know how he would go from critical condition to able to go to the juvenile detention center so quickly unless he is in some sort of medical ward there (not sure what they have or don't have).

How did he get the gun? have they established any connect to a Nazi group who might have provided him the gun? Did he steal his parents' gun? The lack of information from the police just seems strange and disturbing.

How does it work if the person is severely cognitively impaired. My guess is if he gets out the hospital he will have the mental capacity of someone under 5.

He also had a well documented history of mental illness apparently. I'm not sure how fit he was before he shot himself in the head.

Apparently in Virginia, these cases involving underage defendants start off in juvenile court and then from there they can get charged as an adult. But they always start off being charged as a juvenile.

So far it doesn't sound like this guy is well enough for the charges to proceed. He may never recover enough to go to court.
