Neither book graphically depicts 9 year olds giving each other blow jobs. You just keep throwing out these words as if they are actually true and you HAVE NOT READ EITHER BOOK. You aren't even describing the excerpts taken out of context correctly. Not even remotely correctly.

It's astonishing really. Life is short, and you are taking time out of your very short life to comment on an anonymous discussion board to type COMPLETELY INACCURATE THINGS. So, one of two things is going on:

1) You are emotionally triggered and care nothing about truth, accuracy, decency, or integrity.
2) You are a paid political agitator astroturfing here to amplify all these lies.

I'd actually prefer to believe it is 2 because it's too horrifying to think that there are regular, everyday Fairfax parents who are this willfully stupid and reactionary. But I fear you are #1 here. I **HAVE*** read the books. Both of them. Neither book is pornographic, not even close. Of course I do not want my 3rd grader checking out Gender Queer....but he is not in high school. Once he is in high school, I would not have a problem with it. The entire book itself is actually quite sensitive, and the pages that people are freaking out about, in context, depict a rare and much needed scene where two young adults negotiate consent and boundaries with each other with kindness and understanding. The page is not sexy. No one is going to be seeking it out or using it for arousal purposes....actual p*Rn is accessible with a couple of clicks on just about any non-school device.

I find it absolutely appalling that people like you are commenting when you obviously have not read either book. The whole book. It's laughable that you accuse me of not reading it!

Parents who are up in arms about the books and think removing them is terrible and so -

if you came across videos or photos of the acts being described in the books in your child’s phone or laptop, how would you react? Would you have a talk with them regarding why porn is not appropriate? Because I think almost all of you would be upset, horrified and have that conversation. And a small minority would be ok with it. I also think this same group of parents would be livid if their older child brought home one of these books an left them in a place or even shared them with younger siblings.

I don’t get on board with the idea that these graphic novels are some kind of hallmarks of great literature so to me removing them is no big loss. Before you get so upset ask yourself if you actually think they are? Just because someone slaps an award on a book or some activist or critic likes them, it doesn’t mean they are that needed. Most literary awards of subjective anyway.
