I still can't figure out why anyone would object to getting a free, safe and effective vaccine in the middle of a global pandemic.

Sounds to me like your son has been radicalized by rightwing propaganda. You should be concerned about what other dangerous beliefs he might be harboring, as well as how he came to hold these ideas. Clearly someone has been influencing him though. I’d have a very uncomfortable discussion with him and make it clear in no uncertain terms that he’s on thin ice.

The worst part about it is, he's perfectly content with his parents' greatly increased risk of death should they choose not to get vaccinated. Better remove him from the will.

Because Canada is requiring more foreign border crossers to be required. As of January 15, 2022 the following groups of border crossers must be fully vaccinated:

-Individuals travelling to reunite with family
-International students
-Professional athletes and their support staff, and amateur athletes
-Individuals with a valid work permit
-Most essential service providers (including truck drivers, emergency service providers and marine researchers)

In short, why are truckers special snowflakes? Why do they deserve an exemption from the requirements for border crossers?

All of that sounds like dumb policy now that omicron has passed. But hey, they elected Trudeau, they must have a strong desire for dumb policy.

After OG Covid we got Delta, and after that we got Omicron. I don’t see why you think vaccination requirement policies should change just because you think we’re on a break from the latest variant, which is still btw killing thousands of Americans every day right now.

Some of us prefer a government that secures our rights rather than giving us orders.

Since the vaccine does offer some protection against Omicron infection, but especially against hospitalization, maybe Canada doesn't want to foot the medical care of a bunch of unvaccinated foreigners?

Or maybe they just can’t stand it when citizens won’t shut up and take orders.

All we heard about for years was the railing against "antifa" in Portland. So now, protests are good?

(and to avoid the whataboutism, in Portland, it was one city block that the public had full access to; in Canada, they blocked an international crossing and shut down downtown Ottawa)

Opposing mandates is a RWNJ opinion, held by right wing nut jobs like Matthew McConaughey the actor.

Completely radical.

It is also a libertarian opinion and yes, that’s radical.

Most aren’t even truckers. This is Flynn/Stone/Bannon and their financial backers (foreign adversaries) trying to dismantle western democracy. Stop falling for it.

63% of Canadians favor a vaccine mandate.

As you can apparently not be bothered to read, this thread or anywhere. It is not about the truckers. It is not about the mandate. The truckers could not enter the US even if they wanted to come back unvaccinated to Canada. The mask mandates they are apparently fighting are decided at provincial level of mandate, not federal, so these people are “protesting” the wrong people to start with.

It is about creating doubt, instability, chaos and buying into their own extreme right wing political agenda. Good people have unfortunately tagged along, thinking it IS about the mandates, but that’s not the real intent. The bulk of the money funding this is not Canadian, and nor are many of the supporters. Anecdotally, the people I know who are strong supporters of the real political cause are all US born living in Canada.

And as far as “running it’s course”, Canada’s health care system is not the US health care system. Where I live, last week the hospital was still at 98% capacity. Not long ago, people from the smaller provinces were being shipped into Ontario for ICU beds (ironically, it’s these provinces who now think it’s time to lift mandates). Even after the peak of a wave, that still means 50% of cases have yet to occur. It doesn’t mean it’s suddenly over. Aside from that, there is still a large backlog of surgeries and medical procedures to be done for people that have waited in lieu of the beds for people who couldn’t bother to get vaccinated. The pressure is still very much on the health care system for normal, healthy people, and that seems to get lost in the COVID is over messages.

We support their right to peaceful protest.
In general, we do not have the propensity for violence that other countries do. Nor do we have the resources.

This crew never came with the mind of a peaceful came out of the gate saying they would settle for nothing less than all MPs resigning. These sound like reasonable people they can negotiate with?

It's called Law and Order.

It's pretty clear that right wingers aren't really protesting just the mask mandates any more. They are after something more fundamental: the ability of government to establish and enforce laws. To a significant number of "sovereign citizens" (which now forms the philosophic basis of the Republican Party), no government at the Federal, State, or Local level really has legitimate ability to control individual action. If this sounds like Libertarian anarchy, well that's exactly it.
