Bubba is the dog and it was not a bird. It was a chicken bone. Chicken bones are dangerous for dogs so I guess that is why they were trying to get it out of Bubba's mouth.

She fell to her hands and knees and he shot her at least two more times, one in the back if the head. (I know she was shot 5x so there was a third shot either standing or down). Neither had time to put up their hands defensively. I wonder if Maggie thought a gun had misfired at first.
