Interesting.. because one of the reasons Trumpsters hate illegal immigrants so much is because they don't pay taxes.

you are a sucker for paying your fair share of taxes while rich people like Trump pay 0, oh sorry, all of $750.

“Nearly 700,000 DACA recipients living across households in all 50 states contribute $5.7 billion in federal taxes as well as $3.1 billion in state and local taxes, according to a report released Tuesday.”
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1053041

Note: This piece does not specifically address federal INCOME taxes - which is the topic here.
If you think that Trump has not paid real estate taxes, local taxes, state taxes, and other federal taxes - you have totally fallen for this hit piece by the NYTimes.

Oh, Jared Kushner’s newspaper thinks this was a flop? Shocking.

We’ll never find out for sure, but I think that Trump himself leaked those taxes. For just one year. I’m sure it’s not at all a coincidence that that’s the one year that he sold tens of millions of dollars worth of properties inherited from his father, so he did actually have gains to pay taxes on, AND also the one year that Melania was trying to get citizenship so his taxes had to be squeaky clean because they are submitted as part of that process.

All reported by the NYT without any facts to back it up. All the other news stations say "reported by the NYT".

Where are the link to his taxes, not hearsay.

Why don’t you ask POTUS that since he’s the first president in 40 years not to release his taxes? The NYT has to rely on sources to feed them copies of Trump’s taxes because he won’t release them. Biden released his taxes voluntarily as required without any issue

It's not a law that he has to. Again absolutely no proof coming from the NYT...that's what people want to see. Not more political spin. And Ford didn't release his in 1976, some others only released a year (Reagan) or two.

The "accountants" on this thread are either too in the weeds to see the big picture, or are desperate Trump supporters.

Don't democrats value the opinion of experts? Imagine if someone said that climate scientists are too in the weeds to see the big picture, or are desperate Democratic supporters.

Sorry, are you saying Trump doesn't pay a tiny fraction in income taxes of what teachers, nurses and construction workers pay? Please give me your expert opinion. I'm just a lay person so I don't know if I can understand this fundamental point.

If you admit to being ignorant, then perhaps be a little more modest and less accusatory towards people who know more than you on the subject matter. No one is saying everything that Trump has done with regards to taxes is perfectly fine - just that we don't have enough information to conclude one way or another. It is common and normal for wealthy people, especially those in real estate investments, to use depreciation and other mechanisms to lower/manage their present tax payments. This does *NOT* absolve them from the need to pay taxes on gains, just delay them to future years. The mere fact that Trump paid little to no taxes in two years says *NOTHING* about how much taxes he will eventually have to pay on those gains. This is like a climate change denier pointing to two cold winters and saying "aha! see! there is no global warming!"

The tax will be due, sooner or later. Trump can only delay it. The only escape is death, but that's another topic.

Just because something is common among the wealthy does not mean it is okay. I don't get to put off my taxes year after year (it's not just two - and do not get me started on how utterly ridiculous it is to compare your anonymous posts to decades of consensus on climate science) - and I get charged interest if I make a mistake and underpay. None of this is okay or normal, and regular taxpayers can see that clearly.

You don't have a 401K or a 529? An IRA? You don't have a home office on which you claim depreciation deductions?

If you do have any of those things, you are, in fact, putting off your taxes year after year.

Really? You're comparing me putting off a fraction of the $19,500 max (which is a small fraction of what I owe) to Trump putting off all of his taxes? Really? But seriously, really?

these trumpsters are so entitled that they cannot begin to see when they are being ridiculous.

Was a crime committed by either the leaker of these documents or the New York Times for soliciting them and publishing them?

Not true. I agree with pp.
I couldn't give one hoot about a billionaire who became a politician - and LOST money as a result.
I do care about politicians who have become multi-millionaires while in public office. Those are the tax returns I would like to see.

No, you don't care because it's Trump. Full stop.

No. I don't care because there is nothing illegal here. Except the leaking of tax records - if they are authentic.
Wondering where all the "we need to see Trump's taxes to show his illegal payments from Russia" posters are.

Expensing personal needs to your business is, what do you call it, a crime. That is actually illegal.

And, Nancy Pelosi and Dianne Feinstein and Richard Blumenthal and Maxine Watters several others.

You must lack emotional intelligence if you cannot see that the problem here isn't legal, it is moral. You keep focusing on what is legal, but that is not what is so upsetting about this.

No, what he did is ILLEGAL. Yes, we have a skewed tax system with all sorts of incentives for avoidance. But Trump did illegal things with his taxes. Clearly.

The real news is that Trump is insolvent. He is broke, with much larger debts coming due soon. That is a major national security concern for the US. Someone who is personally in debt hundreds of million dollars to foreign creditors (read: Russian) cannot be President.

+1000. Anyone who has gone through a security clearance would know how much of a risk Trump is to our national security.

Yup. You can’t get a security clearance most of the time because it makes you vulnerable to being bought. Case in point is our POTUS now. Regardless of who wins in November, I hope that Republicans find the ethics they checked at the door of Mar-a-Lago and require all future presidential candidates to release their taxes. It’s good governance

Not going to happen. There is not an ethical bone in McConnell's body.

How much should he have paid?

Probably more than $750.

How much though. I need to know how triggered I should get

Don’t be triggered, be proud that such a savvy businessman is our president. We should emulate him and try to pay so little in taxes. He’s figured out the system and should teach the rest of us how to do it too.
