Is it ok to apply for magnet program when the child is also in screening pool for AAP? I mean has anyone experienced if it would have any negative impact on AAP screening?

(disclaimer: I have a 5th grader in the AAP program who has never taken the WISC)

I don't think anyone is bribing anyone, although I do suspect that some people shop around and have their kid take the WISC more than once to get the score they want.
If I had chosen to have my child take the WISC, I wouldn't have GMU do it. I know that they use grad students (and often first-timers) to administer the test. The kid being tested is essentially a guinea pig for someone to try out their testing skills on. I believe this is why some students have strangely high or strangely low scores after testing at GMU.

Even if you do manage to bribe and get high WISC score and get your kid in AAP. You really need to understand that you might be getting your kid in a group of students who may be a little ahead of him/her and make his / her life miserable.

I think, parents need not prove to the rest of the world if their child is naturaly "gifted" . I mean, if they score anywhere around 90% in COGAT/NNAT, they are still smart kids. If WISC can strengthen their selection process and if they can afford it, I dont see anything wrong about it. People who didnot go through the process, please dont put in your own subjective/sour grapes ideas about WISC.

CogAT,NNAT2/WISC-IV should be highly correlated, however, personally I am still puzzled by the fact that sometimes they don't and could go either directions. More often I hear that kids score much higher on WISC than CogAT but my DC scored 99th or above on both CogAT and NNAT2 but bombed the WISC-IV (taken for a different reason after acceptance to the program). Any thoughts?

It's more expensive, but the scorers can't be bribed.
Naturally, those who got in via WISC will extoll its virtues.
BTW, you don't have to go to GMU for that test. Just find a child psychologist who can do it. Excellent result s have been widely reported here 8), even for those who completely bombed the CogAts.

Not PP, but I'll answer this one--Because group testing is much cheaper than individual testing. There's no way public school would administer individual tests for every kid. If parents are willing to pay out of pocket, fine, the school will be happy to take a look at the individual testing scores. Otherwise, you'll just have to settle on the group ones.

That is ridiculous. I don't think you can go to GMU and pay them for a score. The WISC is absolutely the most comprehensive test. There are 15 different subsections, no 'test prep' is available and there's no 'guessing' since it's an individual test given orally, so if you guess it is apparent. I think the WISC score is the probably the true ability of that child.

A WISC score is no less likely to be a "fluke" high or low score than the CogAT or NNAT.

I have often wondered about this since it seems curious to read so frequently how parents of kids with low CogAT and NNAT scores
pay good money for a WISC and voila, they get a high score very much at odds with the othe tests - then use the WISC score to get in.
Maybe you get what you pay for, eh?

That is really subjective. I would say a 13 is a good score, but it really depends upon the other items in the submission packet. A student with scores in the 140s would likely be ok with GBRS of 11 and perhaps even 10.

Way off base! My DD got 114 cogat, 108 nngt, 7 GBRS and 141 WISC: accepted.

BWAHAHAHA!!! "Way off base" with a WISC in the 140s? The post states that a student with scores in the 140s would likely be ok with lower GBRS.

For those that haven't read the umpteen million threads on this board about GT -- IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT TEST SCORES!!!!!!!!!

I guess in this case it was.

I don't understand this. If a kid's score is not a big factor why put them thro test. A test is a test to exhibit what they possess.
Be it a fluke. Every test is like that. Anyways, how many kids actually get that kind of score with real LUCK. If one outof say 20
Kids get in by luck, so be it.

Magnet schools pickbkids by lottery system. They don't make a big deal about it. I would rather give weightage to scores and
Report cards rather than a teacher's subjective GBRS.
