There is already a Marshall High School. That had a lot to do with the opposition on that. Kind of a "no brainer". Would have required new uniforms, signage, etc. for TWO schools. Still cannot believe Evans did not figure that out early in the process--but, no, she thought it was a great idea to name it after Thurgood Marshall when the process started. So did Hynes.

And, the Barbara Johns thing was because Keys-Gamarra messed up her motion. She was so determined to name it after Thurgood Marshall. That's what the NAACP initially wanted and she wanted to make sure that is what they got. "Justice" was the closest she could get.

Not everyone agrees with the Mendez assessment.

Could you please explain the problem with it? I only see one from the perspective of the Board members who voted against it.

The changes were determined to honor Thurgood Marshall. "Justice" is the closest they could come since there was already a Marshall High School. Go listen to Keys-Gamarra.

Mendez was clearly the best choice. I was for "Stuart" until I saw the presentation. Couldn't believe they did not go with Mendez. It had everything needed. And, "Mendez Raiders" even would have reflected one of his units. It made so much sense: minority (double--Hispanic and Native American); war hero; educator and public servant; community member; kids went to Stuart.

Hands down best choice. It was clear why he was not chosen.

+1000. I don't think there are really more than a handful of people who like the name they picked.

Not everyone agrees with the Mendez assessment. Any choice would have detractors. In time, people will see the wisdom of this choice for the name.

Good luck the next time you want to name or rename a school after a woman or minority. Rejecting Mendez in favor of a generic name like Justice will make that very difficult. I see only theme and geographic names in the future.

Actually, when all the incidental costs and administrative costs are factored in, it is conservative. And, a million dollars could hire ten teachers for a year. You may think that is immaterial. I do not.
