Another description:

Trump’s anger reached a boiling point when Comey refused to preview for top Trump aides his planned testimony before a Senate panel last week. From Reuters’ Steve Holland and Jeff Mason: “Trump, Sessions and Rosenstein had wanted a heads-up from Comey about what he would say at a May 3 hearing about his handling of an investigation into [Clinton's] use of a private email server. When Comey refused, Trump and his aides considered that an act of insubordination … A former Trump adviser said Trump was also angry because Comey had never offered a public exoneration of Trump in the FBI probe into contacts between the U.S. ambassador to Russia, Sergei Kislyak, and Trump campaign advisers last year.” One adviser said Comey’s Senate testimony on Clinton reinforced in Trump’s mind that “Comey was against him.” "He regretted what he did to Hillary but not what he did to Trump," A former adviser added.

It's all about Trump wanting loyalists to protect him. Comey was not beholden to Trump, so Trump can't guarantee his loyalty. Trump sees that as a threat.

I think the real reason he finally fired Comey was becaue Comey dared to insinuate that HRC could've won if not for his interference. It's all Trump's ego, yet again.

And Trump also felt that the FBI director shouldn't be bipartisan, but be his stooge, and was mad that Comey wasn't.

http://www.businessinsider.com/why-did-trump-fire-comey-fbi-director-2017-5

""It makes me mildly nauseous to think that we might have had some kind of impact on the election," Comey told the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, as he was explaining his decision to notify Congress that the FBI was reopening its Clinton investigation.

That comment angered Trump, who "complained" about it "with expletives," CNN reported.

...
The next day, Comey confirmed in the open — and televised — hearing that the FBI was still investigating whether there was "any coordination" between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. Comey had not allowed the White House to preview his testimony beforehand, which Trump and his aides considered "an act of insubordination," according to Reuters. The New York Times echoed that report, noting that Trump was broadly irked by his inability to gain assurances of loyalty from Comey."

Totally unsubstantiated but plausible turn of events:

Trump: I don't like that guy Comey! I want to fire him! You, Rosenstein, give me a memo with something he did wrong so I can fire him.

Rosenstein: Hm, well, there was that Clinton thing. Lots of people upset about that. Trump actually liked what he did then. Wonder what he'll do if I give him that as the only example of Comey's wrongdoing. He won't possibly fire Comey over that.

Trump: (receives memo, sends off his firing letter without reading memo)

Media backlash ensues.

Trump: Huh? What do you mean I fired him over the Clinton email thing? I thought I was firing him cause he's a bad hombre.

You are wrong.

Oh? He has already done so.

Maybe he never intended to.

I tend to think he didn't. After all, there is room to criticize Comey's decisions last year without saying that he should be fired in a humiliating manner. Rosenstein says A in his memo and Trump says uses it to say Z.

Me too -- I'd be inclined to stay, having gone this far, but then, I'm not currently living in the tension that Rosenstein is - and I'm glad of it.

Maybe he'll get fired and finally the Hill republicans will take notice

We are allowed to do business with Russia for God's sake. There's a business council for God's sake!

Trump has done business with Russia. He also swears he hasn't and intends to attest to it in an affidavit.

Trump did not do ILLEGAL business with Russia. LEGAL business is just that.

Actually his New Jersey casinos laundered Russian money. Could be construed as illegal business.

And then there is this - has ANYONE read this? If he was involved in this deal in Azerbaijan what makes anyone think he wouldn't be involved with the Russians.

Way too long for low information Trump voters. Can't be summarized as pithily as "....but her emails!"

No, the story is that Rosenstein threaten to quit when the White House said that he is the one who initially proposed firing Comey. In fact the White House said they wanted to fire Comey and tasked Rosenstein with creating a basis for firing. It was not Rosenstein's independent choice to fire. He was following orders. The WH was trying to make Rosenstein the fall guy for all the bad press, and Rosenstein is refusing to take responsibility for the WH's mess.

Thank you.

DP. I read this back when it came out. Excellently written and well-sourced article, I thought. Long, but without question worth a read.
