That is so stupid. Have you read their book. She was not mentally ill. She was on sedatives days after the murder because she could not deal with what had happened to her daughter which is a normal response.

Good points. To me, the fact that they didn't immediately make themselves available for interview is a huge red flag. I can't imagine what kind of parents wouldn't do everything they could to help police catch the killer. Since I know I didn't do anything wrong, let them do whatever they need to do to eliminate me as a suspect instead of wasting time investigating me.
Unfortunately two world doesn't work this way. You are lucky to be so naive. Plenty of innocent people are out in jail. If you are a suspect, and you are smart, you get a lawyer. Anything you say can and will be used against you.
They could have gotten a lawyer and done the interviews with the lawyer present. They stalled instead. (And FWIW, I am a lawyer.)
When's the last time rich white people went to prison for a murder they had zero to do with? I'm sure it's happened once or twice, but it's not a frequent occurrence.
I would take the chance in hopes of catching the killer.

A shame he's not being protected.
The dad is still around, right?

Nerves maybe?
Just nerves. It would be really hard to remember vivid details back to when you were nine.
He's a tad bit on the spectrum- it is apparent even during his interview as a child. However, Dr. Phil has got to be the worst crime or person interviewer ever. Leading questions, ridiculous questions of a man who was 9 years old at the time. " You wanted attention, right? Jon Benet wanted all the attention at the time..."
What an ass.
In addition to possibly being on the spectrum. He's had a difficult life. Losing his younger sister to a brutal crime as a child. His family never being quite the same after that. Him and his parents being accused of the murders. Losing his mom to cancer. All of that would do a number on a person's "normal" response meter.

Wrote the note while they were at the party. Woke up JB and gave her the pineapple. Hit her with the flashlight. Took her down the basement. Was going to take her in the suitcase out the window. She wouldn't fit. He assaulted her and used the paintbrush. He couldn't do the act himself (old man, recent surgery, this was pre-viagra) but he wanted to penetrate her. (yuck). She still had a pulse so he finished her off with the garrotte.
And spent hours in an unfamiliar house with the family sleeping upstairs, including washing and re-dressing the child's body?
Plus this was all quiet enough not to wake anybody? Really preposterous.
I thought they did scream tests and you can't hear anything from the basement in the MBR. But there is an exhaust vent or something that directs toward a neighbor, a neighbor who did hear screaming.
